Autumn Fishing in Sweden — the biggest predators of the year
Autumn is when Swedish fishing peaks. Cooling water sends pike, perch and zander into heavy feeding before winter, and the fish that make the season are caught between September and November. Here is what bites, where to go — and what is protected right now.
Best time to fish in autumn
Autumn lifts the summer restriction. Once the water cools below roughly 15°C, fish stop hiding from the midday sun and feed right through the day — you no longer have to be on the water at four in the morning. An overcast, breezy day often beats a still and bright one, because low light keeps predators hunting shallow for longer.
Where to go
The five big lakes are free to fish and hold every autumn predator worth chasing:

Species — what's biting in autumn
- Pike. The headline act of autumn. Pike feed up before winter and take bigger baits than in summer — jerkbaits and 15–25 cm soft plastics. October and November produce the heaviest fish of the year.
- Perch. Shoals hunt bleak and pack tightly together. Vertical fishing with small jigs around points and rocky reefs, or light jerk-spinning in open water when fish show at the surface.
- Zander. Hunting actively along the deep edges all autumn. Vertical fishing with a 10–15 cm soft plastic on a heavy jig head. Dusk and night still fish best — zander outsee their prey in the dark.
- Arctic char. Mountain char fish well through September and October. In the deep southern lakes char move to spawn and are protected — check the rules for that specific water first.
- Whitefish. The spawning migration starts in October and November, and is the classic whitefish season. Bait fishing with maggot hard on the bottom, or trolling in Vänern and Vättern.
- Grayling. September is the last real month before the season closes in most counties. Dry fly when there is a hatch, nymph when there is not.
What is protected right now
Autumn is spawning season for several salmonids, and this is the part most seasonal guides skip. Brown trout spawn in running water from October, Arctic char move to spawn in the deep southern lakes such as Vättern and Sommen, and whitefish gather over shallow gravel in October and November. All three are protected in many waters during that period.
Closed seasons and minimum sizes vary by county and by water, so check svenskafiskeregler.se and the county administrative board before you go — and read our guide to Swedish fishing rules.
Darkness, weather and safety
By late October it is dark before five in the afternoon across most of the country, and the water is cold enough that going in is serious. Bring a head torch and spare batteries, dress for wind rather than air temperature, wear a flotation aid in the boat, and tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
Fishing licence (fiskekort)
Most inland waters require a local permit. Read our full fishing licence guide — it covers the free lakes, the coast, and how to buy a permit online.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to fish in autumn in Sweden?
Autumn removes the summer constraint: once the water cools, fish feed through the middle of the day instead of only at dawn and dusk. September to November is prime time, and an overcast, windy day is often better than a still, bright one.
What species are biting in Swedish autumn?
Autumn is the big predator season. Pike, perch and zander all peak from September to November as they feed heavily before winter. Whitefish run to their spawning grounds in October and November, and grayling fish well through September.
Which fish are protected in autumn?
Several salmonids spawn in autumn and are protected in many waters — brown trout in running water, Arctic char in the deep southern lakes, and whitefish around the spawning grounds. Closed seasons vary by county, so always check the rules before you fish.
Do I need a fishing licence for autumn fishing in Sweden?
Yes, for most inland waters. The five big lakes and the entire coast are free to fish. Everywhere else you buy a local permit, usually online.
Is autumn fishing better than summer fishing?
For predators, generally yes. Pike and zander feed hard before winter and the biggest fish of the year are often caught in October and November. The trade-off is weather and daylight.
