Pike fishing in Sweden
Pike (Esox lucius) is Sweden's most iconic predator and lives in practically every lake and slow-flowing watercourse in the country. With its elongated body, powerful jaws and explosive ambush attacks, pike is the sport angler's favourite — and one of the most searched-for fish in Sweden.

Gäddan är Sveriges populäraste rovfisk. Aggressiv predator som hugger på allt från jiggar till stora wobblers. Bästa fisket sker vår och höst.

Fishing tips & gear
- Large soft-plastic shads 12–25 cm (Savage Gear 4Play, Westin Shad Teez, Strike Pro Pig Shad, Headbanger Shad)
- Jerkbaits (Westin Swim, Savage Gear 3D Roach Jerkster, Strike Pro Buster Jerk)
- Crankbaits 12–20 cm (Rapala Super Shad Rap, Salmo Slider)
- Spinnerbaits 20–40 g
- Spoons 18–40 g (Abu Atom, Falkfish Thor)
- Large jerk/swim baits (Rapala X-Rap Magnum, Westin Swim 15 cm)
- Bladed jigs / chatterbaits 20–40 g
Spring: shallow bays 0.5–2 m, slow retrieve. Summer: work the thermocline at 3–6 m with faster lures. Autumn: go bigger, chase baitfish schools. A fish-finder helps enormously. Catch & release is recommended for pike over 80 cm.

Where to find pike in Sweden
Pike are found across the whole of Sweden, from Skåne in the south to the Torne River in the north, as well as along the entire Baltic coast. Classic pike waters include Mälaren, Hjälmaren, Vänern, Vättern, Ivösjön and Bolmen — plus thousands of smaller forest lakes. On the coast, the Stockholm archipelago, Blekinge and Åland are world-renowned pike destinations.
Pike hold along reed edges, lily pads, points and submerged rock formations where they can ambush prey. Through summer, the larger fish move out to deeper, cooler water around 6–10 metres.
Season and best time to fish
Spring (March–May), immediately after ice-out, is peak season for big pike — the fish gather in shallow spawning bays. Autumn fishing from September to November is equally good as pike feed heavily before winter.
Closed seasons apply in some counties and along the east coast, typically 1 April–31 May. Always check svenskafiskeregler.se and the county administrative board's rules before you fish.
Methods and lures
Spin fishing with jerkbaits, soft plastics (15–25 cm), spinners and spoons is the standard approach. Use 30–50 lb braid and a 40–60 cm wire trace — a pike's teeth cut straight through ordinary monofilament.
Trolling large crankbaits in deeper lakes such as Vänern and Vättern produces the biggest fish. Through the ice, jigging with a balance lure or dead roach works all winter. On the fly: large streamers 15–25 cm on a sinking line.
Tackle and rigs for pike
A spinning rod of 7–9 feet rated 40–120 grams covers most situations — shorter from a boat, longer from the bank. Pair it with a 4000–5000 size spinning reel or a baitcaster loaded with 0.30–0.40 mm braid (30–50 lb) for casting distance and the power to lift a fish clear of reeds.
The rig is always braid to a 40–60 cm wire trace to the lure. Use high-quality trebles or twin hooks, and replace factory hooks on new lures straight away — they are usually too light for big pike.
Always carry long unhooking pliers (at least 30 cm), side cutters, an unhooking mat and a large rubber-mesh net. Pike are tough but fragile: hold them horizontally, support the belly and keep them off dry ground.
Rules, size limits and handling
Pike rules differ between inland lakes and the coast, and between counties. Parts of the Baltic coast use slot limits (fish both below and above a given length must be released) and daily bag limits. On inland waters the local fishery management association often sets its own rules, printed on the fiskekort (fishing permit).
Check three things before you fish: that you hold a valid permit for the water, the spring closed season, and any minimum size or slot limit. The county administrative board and svenskafiskeregler.se are the current sources — rules change between seasons.
Large pike are old fish and important to the ecosystem. Most pike fishing in Sweden is catch and release: photograph quickly, keep the fish in the water between shots and release it when it swims off under its own power.
