Summer Fishing in Sweden — where to fish on your vacation
Sweden is built for summer fishing: 100,000+ lakes, midnight sun, free big-lake fishing and a coast bursting with mackerel. Here's how to get on the water this June, July and August.
Best time to fish in summer
Early morning (04–08) and late evening (20–24) are the prime windows. Fish go deep during bright midday and feed actively in cooler low light. In northern Sweden the midnight sun lets you fish all night.

Species — what's biting in summer
- Pike. Morning fishing with jerkbaits or spinners on shallow weed edges. As water warms, look for cooler drop-offs by day.
- Perch. Small jigs and drop-shot around rocky reefs and jetties. The classic Swedish family fishing from shore with a float rig.
- Zander. Night fishing with crankbaits or jigs over drop-offs. Overcast summer evenings are gold.
- Brown trout. Find cool mountain streams and northern rivers. Fly fishing with dry fly on cooler evenings.
- Mackerel. West coast from mid-July onwards. Sabiki rigs from pier or boat — kid-friendly and rewarding.
- Salmon. Big rivers like Mörrum, Em and Byske. Summer salmon takes flies or crankbaits in early morning.
Fishing with kids
Float fishing for perch from a jetty is the classic Swedish summer activity. Bring a simple float rod, worms or maggots, and a bucket. Most municipalities have free family-friendly spots — see the lake pages on FishMap for accessibility info.
Evening & night fishing
Once the sun drops, zander wakes up. Cast crankbaits or jigs along drop-offs from 9 pm onwards. In June–July around the summer solstice, fishing through the bright night is unforgettable.
Fishing license (fiskekort)
Most inland waters require a local permit. Read our full fishing license guide — it covers free lakes, the coast, and how to buy a permit online.
