When you only have room for two spoon or spinner colors in your tackle box, pick silver and gold. They cover almost every situation. Silver works best on sunny days in clear water. It mimics the flash of baitfish scales and reflects direct sunlight, creating the kind of flicker that triggers predatory instinct in pike, perch, and trout. Gold works best on overcast days and in stained or tea-colored water. Gold reflects available light more efficiently in low-light conditions and stands out better against brownish or greenish water than silver does. Copper is the overlooked third option. In very dark, tannic water (common in forest lakes and bog-fed streams), copper outperforms both silver and gold. It gives a warm, subtle flash that looks natural in water with a brown tint. Bonus trick: if the sun keeps going in and out of clouds, use a lure with both silver and gold sides. That way you are covered no matter what the sky does.

Fish are cold-blooded. Their metabolism, and therefore their willingness to chase fast-moving prey, is directly tied to water temperature. Adjusting your retrieve speed to the temperature is one of the simplest ways to catch more fish. Cold water (under 10 °C): Slow everything down. Use slow-sinking jigs, pause your retrieve for 3 to 5 seconds between twitches, and let the lure hover in the strike zone. Pike and zander in cold water will not chase a fast lure, but they will eat something that drifts right past their nose. Vertical jigging and slow trolling shine in cold conditions. Medium water (10–18 °C): This is the sweet spot. Fish are active but not frantic. A steady medium retrieve with occasional pauses works well for spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and soft plastics. Vary your speed until you find what triggers strikes. Warm water (over 18 °C): Speed up. Fish metabolism is high and they are willing to chase. Buzzbaits, fast-retrieved spinnerbaits, and topwater lures come into their own. Perch especially become aggressive chasers in warm water. Morning and evening are best because dissolved oxygen drops in hot midday water. The twitch-and-pause method works across all temperatures. Even in warm water, a sudden stop can trigger a reaction strike from a fish that was following but hesitating.

Everyone knows dawn and dusk are prime fishing hours. But writing off midday is a mistake, especially for certain species and techniques. Why dawn and dusk work: low light angles reduce surface glare, making fish less cautious. Water temperatures are often ideal (especially in summer). Baitfish are more active in transition light. Predators like pike and zander use the low light to ambush. Why midday can be just as good: during midday in spring and autumn, the sun warms the water and activates fish that were sluggish in the cold morning. Perch especially feed actively in bright midday sun during cooler months. In summer, midday is tougher in shallow water (too warm, too bright), but deep-water jigging for zander and lake trout can be excellent because these species retreat to deeper, cooler water. The overlooked window: the hour after a weather change. If it has been sunny all morning and clouds roll in at noon, the drop in light can trigger a feeding frenzy. Similarly, if it has been overcast and the sun suddenly breaks through, fish often respond with a short burst of activity. Best strategy: fish the edges (dawn, dusk, weather changes) with aggressive presentations, and fish the midday hours with slower, deeper techniques.

The single most important factor when choosing lure color is water clarity, not the color of the fish you are targeting. This rule of thumb works everywhere, from Scandinavian forest lakes to clear mountain streams. Clear water (visibility over 2 meters): Use natural, subtle colors. Silver, green pumpkin, brown, and translucent patterns work best because fish can see your lure from a distance and reject anything that looks unnatural. Match the color to whatever baitfish actually live in that water. Stained water (visibility 0.5–2 meters): Switch to brighter colors. Chartreuse, orange, firetiger, and white with chartreuse accents cut through the murk. These colors give enough contrast for fish to spot the lure without it looking completely alien. Murky water (visibility under 0.5 meters): Go dark or go loud. Black, black/blue, and dark purple create a strong silhouette against the lighter surface above. Alternatively, use pure white for maximum contrast. Add a rattle here – the fish are hunting more by lateral line than by sight when the water is really dirty. Quick cheat sheet: "Bright day, bright lure. Dark day, dark lure" is wrong. The correct version is "Clear water, natural colors. Dirty water, loud colors."

Red is the first color to disappear as you fish deeper. At around 5 meters, a red lure looks grey or black to a fish. By 10 meters, the color is completely gone. This matters because many anglers choose red lures for deep jigging or trolling, thinking red signals "blood" or "injured prey." In reality, the fish cannot see the red at that depth – the lure just looks like a dark silhouette. The color spectrum underwater works like this, from first to last to disappear: red (gone by 5 m), orange (by 10 m), yellow (by 15 m), green (by 25 m), blue (visible deepest). UV and fluorescent colors keep their visibility longer than non-fluorescent versions of the same shade. Practical takeaway: Use red lures in shallow water (under 3 meters) where the color is fully visible. For deeper water, switch to blue, purple, green, or UV-reflective lures. If you want that "wounded prey" effect in deep water, use a lure with a slow, erratic action instead of relying on color.

Your fishing line is the most underrated piece of the puzzle. The wrong line can kill an otherwise perfect presentation. Monofilament (nylon) is forgiving and stretchy. Use it for topwater lures and crankbaits where you want some shock absorption. It floats, which helps keep topwater lures on the surface. Downsides: it stretches (less sensitivity) and it has memory (coils up). Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater because its refractive index is close to water. Use it as a leader in clear water, especially for line-shy species like zander, trout, and perch. It sinks, making it good for jigs and bottom presentations. Downsides: stiffer, more expensive, and less forgiving on knots. Braided line has zero stretch and maximum sensitivity. Use it for jigging, soft plastics, and any technique where you need to feel the bottom or detect subtle bites. It cuts through vegetation, which matters in weed-heavy lakes. Always use a fluorocarbon or steel leader with braid, since braid is highly visible underwater. Steel leader: mandatory for pike fishing. Pike have razor-sharp teeth and will cut through mono and fluoro in a second. Use at least 20 cm of steel or titanium. For zander and perch, skip the steel and use 50 to 80 cm of fluorocarbon leader instead, since steel can spook them.

When you arrive at a new spot, give it exactly 15 minutes of focused casting before you decide to stay or move on. Follow this system during the quarter hour: Minutes 1–5: Fan-cast the area. Make casts at different angles to cover as much water as possible. Start with a search bait (spinnerbait, crankbait, or a medium-sized jerkbait) that covers water quickly. Minutes 5–10: If you had any follows, bumps, or short strikes, slow down and target that specific area with a more finesse presentation (smaller jig, drop-shot, or slower retrieve). Minutes 10–15: Try a completely different approach. If you started with a fast-moving lure, switch to something slow. If you fished the surface, go deep. Give the spot one more chance with a different look. If nothing happens after 15 minutes, move. Too many anglers waste hours in dead water because they keep thinking "one more cast." The fish are either there or they are not. Your time is better spent finding active fish than convincing inactive ones. Exception: if you are fishing a spot that is known to produce at a specific time (dawn, dusk, tide change), it is worth waiting. But in general, keep moving until you find fish, then slow down and work that area thoroughly.

Before you make your first cast, spend two minutes reading the water. The surface tells you more than most anglers realize. Look for current breaks: where fast water meets slow water, food collects and predators wait. Cast your lure so it drifts from the fast side into the slow pocket. Find structure transitions: points where soft bottom meets hard bottom, where weed beds end, where depth changes, and where shade meets sunlight. These edges concentrate fish because they offer both ambush cover and an escape route. Watch for surface activity: rings from feeding fish, baitfish jumping, birds diving. These are obvious signs, but surprisingly many anglers ignore them. If you see baitfish activity, match your lure size and color to whatever is getting eaten. Check the wind: the windward bank (where the wind blows toward) tends to hold more baitfish because wind pushes plankton and small organisms against that shore. Predators follow. Fish the wind-beaten bank first, even if it is harder to cast. Look for color changes in the water. A darker patch in shallow water usually means deeper water, a hole, or submerged vegetation. These are holding spots for bigger fish.

When you arrive at a water you do not know, start with a bigger lure than you think you need. Three reasons: First, bigger lures filter out the small fish. You do not want to waste time catching 100-gram perch when you could be targeting the 1-kilo fish behind them. Big lures filter out the small ones and attract the attention of the real targets. Second, bigger lures are easier for fish to find. In the first few casts, you are searching. A large spinnerbait, jerkbait, or swimbait moves more water, creates more vibration, and is visible from further away. It is the fastest way to determine if there are active predators in the area. Third, big fish eat big meals. A 5-kilo pike does not want to waste energy chasing a 5-cm lure when it could swallow a 15-cm baitfish in one strike. Oversized meals are more energy-efficient for large predators. The scaling-down part: if you are getting follows but no strikes on the big lure, scale down one size. If that does not work, scale down again and slow your retrieve. Often the fish are there but need a less intimidating presentation to commit. The exception is zander. Zander often prefer smaller lures (8–12 cm) even when they are big fish. They have smaller mouths relative to their body size and tend to be more cautious than pike.

The single best thing you can do to improve as an angler is to log every trip. After a year of data, patterns emerge that you would never see from memory alone. What to log on every trip: date and time. Water and exact spot (GPS coordinates or a pin on FishMap). Weather (temperature, wind direction and speed, cloud cover, barometric pressure). Water conditions (water temperature if you have a thermometer, clarity, water level). What you caught (species, length, weight). What lure or bait (type, color, size). Retrieve speed and depth. What did not work (just as valuable as what did). After 20 to 30 logged trips, you will start seeing patterns like: "Pike in this lake hit chartreuse jerkbaits when the water is above 12 °C and the wind is from the southwest." Or: "Perch in this spot are most active between 10:00 and 12:00 in October." Or: "Zander here only bite after dark on slow-retrieved shads in natural colors." These patterns are unique to your waters and your fishing style. No YouTube video or magazine article can give you this information. Only your own data can. This is exactly why FishMap exists.
