Fishing kits – four setups from beginner to expert
Four kits from beginner to expert, covering rod, reel, line, leader, lures, tackle and price ranges. Prices are approximate Swedish retail in SEK; models are examples of the class. Level 2 is the sweet spot for most anglers: about 2,500 to 3,500 SEK buys a balanced spinning setup that will last years.

Overview: which fishing kit suits you?
| Kit | Level | Built for | Setup | Total (SEK, approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Starter | Beginner, kids, first season | Perch, small pike, put and take trout, mackerel | One combo spinning setup | 700–1,500 |
| 2. All-rounder | Improver, 1 to 3 seasons | Perch, pike, zander, sea trout, garfish | One balanced spinning setup with braid | 2,500–3,500 |
| 3. Specialist | Intermediate, targets species | Big pike (casting) + perch/zander (finesse) | Two dedicated setups | 6,000–10,000 |
| 4. Expert | Advanced, fishes a lot | Big pike, zander, coastal sea trout | Three premium setups | 15,000–30,000+ |
Kit 1: Starter – beginner fishing setup (700–1,500 SEK)
| Item | Spec | Example class | Price (SEK) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rod + reel combo | 2.1 m, 10–30 g, 2500 spinning reel | Abu Garcia or Shakespeare Ugly Stik combo | 400–800 |
| Line | Mono 0.25 mm, often pre-spooled | Any brand nylon | 0–100 |
| Leaders | Ready-made wire leaders 30 cm, 10 kg | 5-pack | 50–100 |
| Lures | 3 spoons 10–20 g, 3 spinners size 2–3, 1 small wobbler | Mixed box | 200–400 |
| Tackle | Snap swivels, a float and split shot, size 8 hooks | Small assortment | 50–100 |
| Tools | Pliers, small landing net or none | Basic | 100–200 |
Why it works: mono forgives mistakes, the combo is balanced out of the box, and spoons and spinners catch fish with a plain steady retrieve.
Kit 2: All-rounder – spinning kit for perch, pike and zander (2,500–3,500 SEK)
| Item | Spec | Example class | Price (SEK) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rod | 2.4 m, 7–28 g, fast action | Westin W3, Abu Garcia Vendetta, Savage Gear SG4 | 800–1,300 |
| Reel | 2500–3000 spinning, 5+ bearings, smooth drag | Shimano Nasci or Sahara, Daiwa Fuego, Abu Garcia Revo X | 700–1,200 |
| Main line | Braid 0.12–0.13 mm, 150 m | Daiwa J-Braid, PowerPro, Sufix 832 | 250–350 |
| Leader | Fluorocarbon 0.30 mm + 0.8 mm fluoro or wire for pike | 2 spools | 200–300 |
| Lures | 5 soft shads 8–12 cm + jig heads 7–15 g, 2 spoons, 2 jerkbaits 10–12 cm, 2 coastal lures 18 g | Mixed | 500–800 |
| Tackle | Snaps, swivels, drop shot hooks and weights | Assortment | 100–150 |
| Tools | Long-nose pliers, rubber landing net, lure box | Mid-range | 300–500 |
Why it works: braid gives feel for jigging, the 7–28 g range covers perch shads to pike spoons, and a 2.4 m rod casts well from shore and boat.
Kit 3: Specialist – pike gear + finesse for perch and zander (6,000–10,000 SEK)
| Item | Spec | Example class | Price (SEK) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pike rod | Baitcasting, 2.1–2.4 m, 30–100 g | Westin W4 Powercast, Abu Garcia Beast | 1,500–2,500 |
| Pike reel | Low-profile baitcaster, 200–300 size | Abu Garcia Revo Beast, Shimano Curado | 1,800–3,000 |
| Pike line + leader | Braid 0.25–0.30 mm; titanium or 1.0 mm fluoro leaders | 8-strand braid | 400–600 |
| Finesse rod | 2.1 m, 3–15 g, fast | Westin W4 Finesse, Shimano Zodias | 1,200–2,000 |
| Finesse reel | 2500, light and smooth | Shimano Vanford or Miravel, Daiwa Ballistic | 1,200–2,000 |
| Finesse line + leader | Braid 0.06–0.08 mm, fluoro 0.20–0.25 mm | Premium thin braid | 300–450 |
| Lures | Big shads 18–23 cm, glide bait, jerkbaits; drop shot plastics, small shads, ned rigs | Two boxes | 1,000–1,800 |
| Tools | Jaw spreader, hook cutter, big rubber net, measuring mat | Pike care kit | 500–900 |
Why it works: dedicated tools for two jobs; the baitcaster throws heavy baits all day, the finesse rod detects light perch and zander bites.
Kit 4: Expert – premium setups (15,000–30,000+ SEK)
| Item | Spec | Example class | Price (SEK) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big bait pike setup | 2.4 m, 60–180 g rod + 300–400 size baitcaster | Premium Scandinavian or Japanese casting rods, Shimano Tranx or Daiwa Lexa class reel | 5,000–9,000 |
| Vertical / zander setup | 1.9 m fast jigging rod + premium 2500 reel | Shimano Twin Power or Stella class, Daiwa Certate or Exist class | 5,000–10,000 |
| Coastal sea trout setup | 2.9–3.0 m, 10–35 g + 3000 reel | High-end coastal rods, Shimano Twin Power class reel | 4,000–8,000 |
| Lines and leaders | Premium 8 to 12-strand braids, fluoro and titanium leaders for each setup | Three setups | 800–1,200 |
| Lures | Full assortment per setup, handmade jerkbaits and glide baits | Several boxes | 2,000–4,000 |
| Extras | Waders, polarised glasses, quality net, tackle bag | Premium | 2,000–5,000 |
Why it works: lighter, more sensitive gear reduces fatigue and turns more bites into fish, but the gain from level 3 to 4 is much smaller than from level 1 to 2.
Upgrade tip
Upgrade line and lures before rod and reel; good braid, fresh leaders and the right lure for the conditions improve catch rates more than a premium reel.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a good beginner fishing setup cost?
A ready-made spinning combo with line, leaders and a few lures costs about 700–1,500 SEK. For gear that lasts several seasons, 2,500–3,500 SEK is the best value.
Which fishing kit works for pike and perch?
The All-rounder: a 2.4 m 7–28 g rod, 2500–3000 spinning reel and 0.12–0.13 mm braid with a fluoro or wire leader for pike.
Should I upgrade the rod or the line first?
Line and lures. Good braid, fresh leaders and the right lure catch more fish than a pricier reel.
